I always called these Lapwing Plovers, but apparently that’s not correct. Or not correct anymore. Or something.
Anyway, they’re often found in pairs, fiercely defending their nest, which is actually just a small depression on the ground. If they’re lucky, council will fence off the area around them with witches hats or whatever, but they do put on a real good show if you get too close. And over the road is too close, as far as they’re concerned.
This is the same bird (or it’s partner – both birds take turns at sitting on the eggs) as in this photo.
