Masked Lapwing
Masked lapwing - Vanellus milesI always called these Lapwing Plovers, but apparently that’s not correct. Or not correct anymore. Or something.
Anyway, they’re often found in pairs, fiercely defending their nest, which is actually just a small depression on the ground. If they’re lucky, council will fence off the area around them with witches hats or whatever, but they do put on a real good show if you get too close. And over the road is too close, as far as they’re concerned.
This is the same bird (or it’s partner – both birds take turns at sitting on the eggs) as in this photo.
